What "Child-Resistant" Actually Means — and Why It Matters

In every state with a regulated cannabis program, child-resistant packaging is non-negotiable. State regulators write CR packaging into adult-use and medical statutes for the same reason the federal government wrote it into the Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970: to prevent accidental ingestion by children.

But not all packaging that calls itself "child-resistant" is the same.

ASTM D3475 is the industry test standard that defines whether a container actually qualifies. Packaging is tested by an independent lab against panels of children under five — the package must resist opening by at least 80% of them, while remaining accessible to 90% of adults aged 50 to 70. If a manufacturer can't point to ASTM D3475 documentation, the "child-resistant" label is marketing, not compliance.

Cannabiz Products manufactures CR packaging certified to ASTM D3475 and the corresponding federal 16 CFR 1700.20 standard. When a state inspector, retail partner, or internal compliance review asks for documentation, you have it.

Every CR Format You Need — In One Place

Different products in your catalog need different CR formats. We manufacture the full range:

  • Pinch & Pull Bags — The industry-standard CR mylar zipper bag. Right for most dispensary flower and pre-roll applications. ASTM-certified, three sizes, full-color print.
  • Lock N Pull Bags — Enhanced CR closure adding a locking step before the zipper. Right when your state requires stricter documentation or when you distribute to medical patients.
  • Pre-Roll Boxes — Rigid CR boxes for multi-pack pre-rolls (2pk through 6pk), with senior-friendly opening mechanisms.
  • Doob Tubes — Single-pre-roll tubes in paper or plastic, with child-resistant lid mechanisms.
  • Exit Bags — Smell-proof exit pouches with CR zippers (the standard format for dispensary point-of-sale).
  • Combination Lock Exit Bags — The strictest CR option, with a physical combination lock for markets requiring maximum compliance documentation.
  • Flower Bottles — Plastic or glass CR bottles with senior-friendly push-and-turn caps. Available with UV protection.
  • Vape Packaging — Rigid boxes specifically engineered for vape cartridges, with CR opening mechanisms designed around cartridge geometry.

How to Choose the Right CR Format

The right CR packaging depends on three factors:

1. What's going inside. Flower benefits from bottles or bags that block UV light. Pre-roll multi-packs need rigid boxes that protect cones during shipping. Single pre-rolls work best in doob tubes. Concentrate cartridges need rigid packaging engineered around the cart's dimensions. Edibles pair best with smell-proof exit pouches. Exit bags serve every dispensary as the secondary container at point of sale.

2. Your state's specific CR mandate. Most states accept any ASTM D3475-certified format. Some require specific mechanisms — California's Bureau of Cannabis Control requires opaque CR packaging for flower; Massachusetts allows recloseable CR; Florida's MMTC regulations specify exit bag formats. Some markets (or specific medical-cannabis distribution channels) require the strictest available CR documentation, where the Lock N Pull or Combination Lock formats become the right call. Contact us and we'll review your state's requirements with you.

3. Your branding ambition. Every product in this category is available with full-color custom printing — your logo, brand colors, strain information, required warning language, QR codes, batch numbers. Compliance packaging doesn't have to look generic, and shouldn't.

Pinch & Pull vs. Lock N Pull — How to Choose Between the Bags

Both formats are ASTM-certified. The difference is the closure mechanism.

Pinch & Pull uses a standard pinch-to-open zipper. It's the right choice for most dispensaries and cannabis brands operating in standard CR markets.

Lock N Pull adds a locking step before the zipper engages. It's the right choice when you're in a state with stricter packaging standards, when you distribute to medical patients, or when you want the most defensible compliance documentation available.

If you're unsure which to choose, contact us — we'll review your state's specific requirements.

Custom Printing on Every Product

We print all CR packaging in full color (4/0) using direct-to-substrate printing for rigid containers and digital flexo for flexible bags and pouches. We accept AI, EPS, and high-resolution PDF artwork. A digital proof is always provided before production begins — no exceptions.

For multi-state operators standardizing packaging across markets: we maintain artwork files for re-orders, so re-orders match the original print exactly. State-specific warning text variations can be saved as artwork variants for fast switching between SKUs.
